I am writing this letter in support of the Secret Lantern Society's expression of interest in leasing space on Granville Island. I fully support Naomi's artistic practices and hope that her application for a studio space on Granville Island will be successful. In 2008, Naomi was awarded the BC Community Achievement award and the Vancouver Mayor's Arts Award for Community Engaged Art in 2011. Naomi has created commissioned site-specific decor and installations for events such as the Vancouver International Film, Jazz and Writers Festivals, and the City's 125th Anniversary.
Through her work as a festival organizer, Naomi has mentored and employed numerous artists, and engaged thousands of participants and volunteers. Naomi has been instrumental in creating cultural events, enhancing civic experiences and inspiring public creativity as the founding Artistic Director of the Secret Lantern Society, the Stanley Park Ghost Train, and the creator of the Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, (now in its 23rd year.) and Planet of the Arts, performance nights and parades. Naomi Singer, a 1989 Emily Carr University graduate, is an important community-engaged artist and cultural advocate of Granville Island and Vancouver. I am pleased to write this letter of support for Naomi Singer, recipient of Emily Carr University's Emily Award 2016, for obtaining a studio space on Granville Island.
